Professor Veronica Strang from Durham University will lead a discussion on the theme “Trust me I’m a Doctor: the role of experts in public debates”.
Today there is a hostile anti-intellectualism that influences public debate. This disparagement of education and rational analysis is quite new in Britain. Do we prefer emotional appeal rather than facts?
Drawing on experience of research in different cultural contexts, this debate considers whether there are universal standards of evidence. Perhaps there is a need for a closer partnership between the public and academia?
Should ‘expertise’ be cherished as a vital part of robust collective decision-making – and as the best defence against self-interested political ambitions?
